The Raconteur

The Raconteur - Metuchen

Located on Main Street in Metuchen, this is a quaint little book store that not only has some rare and unique finds, but also has many events that will enlighten and amuse.

Here the mike is set up in preparation for a radio play enactment

Fun and eclectic atmosphere

There were several rare and antique typewriters found though out the store

Found in the front window, a perfect place to have a game of chess

Gems on the Hudson

“That's what it takes to be a hero, a little gem of innocence inside you that makes you want to believe that there still exists a right and wrong, that decency will somehow triumph in the end”
  Lise Hand

Saturday afternoon I met up with a group of Flickr friends and walked through a bit of Liberty State Park. With beautiful views of Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and NY it was a fun afternoon. Saturday afternoon finds cruise ships heading down the Hudson, to enter the Atlantic at NY Harbor. Here is the ship that we saw heading out

Feeling Groovy

"Slow down, you move too fast.  You got to make the morning last.
Just kicking down the cobble stones. Looking for fun and feelin' groovy."
~ The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) Simon and Garfunkel

I know, I'm giving away my age but I couldn't resist! Saturday's trip with Hubby led us to Queensbridge Park, where the Queenboro Bridge was in full view. The weather was so gorgeous, everyone was out and about!

Touch football action on the AstroTurf had a nice crowd of spectators, and hubby was very interested!

Cycling to the park to watch the local touch team and catch up on some reading seemed to be more in line with this young fellow's day

Strolling through parks and all that fresh air made us very hungry for lunch, so we ventured off to find a place. Both of us having grown up in Queens, made this a natural choice we couldn't pass up.

Sorry folks, but they just don't make Gyro sandwiches anywhere else that compare to those in Astoria Queens!

We were greeted with the offer of  a free sample

We just headed right inside and took the plunge

SugarPup agrees, mmm-mmm, best Gyro we've had in years!

Stockton, NJ

Located along the Delaware River, Stockton is a small borough of approximately 560 residents as of the 2000 census.

The borough was incorporated in 1898. This is a very charming town with one of it's main attractions being the Centre Bridge-Stockton Bridge connecting Stockton to Solebury, PA. You can click on each photo to enlarge.

The view from the bridge, the Delaware looking south

Approximately a quarter mile east of the bridge is the D&R Canal path, a path we've been along several times over the last couple of months.

The Stockton Inn, supposedly immortalized by the Rogers and Hart song "There's a Small Hotel" from 1936 Broadway musical "On Your Toes" .

Along Bridge Street there are just a few little shops. This shop caught my eye, especially the horse painting.

This was a short and relaxing Sunday jaunt, we'll probably make another trip to Stockton to catch the last covered bridge in NJ which is in Sergeantsville and Prallsville Mills.

Maywood Station

A quaint little town in Northern N.J., Maywood remembers how important this railroad station is to the development of the area. There is always so much to learn from remembering the past!

Road Trip - Part 1

Now the 4th is behind us and I've been thinking it's time to share what's been going on over the last few weeks. I've shared that we took a short 4 day road trip in June and I'll be posting pictures from the trip over the next several posts.

Steve and I had a great time. It was nice to just get away from the routine of the day to day and spend some time together, despite the weather that covered the entire Eastern US over a very long period. Including during our trip.

Our first stop on the journey was Charles Town, WV (more like the main event). Great place, they have a HUGH casino along with the racetrack. Seems like everyone is competing with Atlantic City these days and adding slots to the racetrack. Anyway, the night was fun but pretty wet as you can see from these photos.

A shot of the track from the field level

The horses were beautiful and ran their races despite the muddy track. (I thought they were pretty sloppy, but Steve said "No, just muddy.")

The casino was also where we had dinner. They had many places to choose from but we just went to the buffet. We enjoyed!

Until next time - Live, Love, Laugh

Trip Planning Day

Sorry to say I didn't have a chance to take any pictures today. It was very busy in the office and I spent the evening planning a short get-away to West Virginia and Virginia, it should be a fun trip, I've never been to either place!

But, I did have to time to pick this oldie out of the computer!

A View From the Garden Gate

This a view of the Cross Estate from the garden gate.
We took a ride to Morristown and visited the Ford Mansion. Morristown is the location of the George Washington's Headquarters during the "Harsh Winter" of 1779 -1780.
Washington's Headquarters
The day included a trip to the Cross Estate Gardens and downtown Morristown. My husband travels through this area frequently and says the town is really pretty during the holidays. We'll just have to go back and check it out!
